Final Performance

 Date of performance: 18/12/19

This is the final solo performance titled Concatenate, created by Level Five BA (Honours) Dance Student, Bethany Schindler. This performance should highlight the principle question and three sub-questions:

How can the body explore jazz and release and fuse them together?

  1. What are the technical differences between jazz and release and how can they integrate?
  2. How can the dynamics of jazz combine with the dynamics of release
  3. How can the space be explored within two styles?

Programme Notes

Concatenate

Performed by: Bethany Schindler

Choreographed by: Bethany Schindler

Music: Olafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm – 00:26 (Ryan Davis Re-Think)
A solo work focusing on an exploration and fusion of two existing styles, release technique and jazz technique. These contrasting styles allow the body to explore the space, combine technical elements, and discover different dynamics, creating a new and refreshing piece of choreography.

Final Evaluation

My final performance titled Cocatenate was performed on the 18th of December 2019 which was the final product of the research and development of a choreography investigation, guided by a principle question and three sub-questions. Overall, I think the solo went well and the choreography was clearly executed, demonstrating the technical differences, the combining of dynamics and the exploration of space within two styles. After my performance I received positive feedback indicating that they could see the fusion of jazz and release. As well as that one person shared that they thought the fusion created a sense of quirkiness which was pleasing to hear as one reason for choosing fusion was to combine technical differences to create new, unusual movement. Moreover I also recieved critical feedback thoughout my workshops such as remembering to use my breath and to release more into the ground. This critical feedback was effective as I believe it allowed me to focus on more of my breath throughout my solo.
As a choreographer, music is very important to me and I carefully analyse my music choices before settling. I decided to use the music 00:26 by Olafur Arnalds& Nils Frahm as it connected well with the dynamics and feel of my solo. Moreover I worked with the Newcastle College technical team in which I settled on dim lighting at the beginning and end, with only a diagonal strip of light. The middle section presentated red lighting because my solo had contrasting dyamics and a sense of power therefore I think red helped to convey this feeling.
To improve, I would have managed my time more effectively in order to have been able to research further into my main principles of choreography as in some workshops I struggled to be productive due to a lack of planning academically. By preparing more research, it would have allowed me to enter a workshop with a stronger focus of what I wanted to achieve.
Finally, I would like to thank the Newcastle College technical team for working with me and providing my lighting and music for my solo.
