Workshop 7
How can the dynamics of jazz combine with the dynamics of release?
How can the body explore the use of space within two different styles?
Date of Workshop: 12/11/19
Aims
- Recap phrases from previous workshops.
- Improvisation tasks - discovering new movement ideas whilst focusing on the use of space and dynamics.
Planning
- Workshop Schedule
Duration: One Hour
- 15:00pm- 15:20pm (20 Minutes): Cleaning and recapping phrases produced from my last six workshops.
- 15:20pm - 16:00pm (40 minutes): Improvising whilst maintaining the intention of the dynamics within release and thinking of how I want to use the space , recording all movement as evidence.
Outcomes
The main principles of this workshop were based on two of my sub-questions which were how can the dynamics of jazz combine with the dynamics of release and how can the body explore the use of space within two different styles.
Video one, two and three: The improvisation of release, focusing on dynamics and space.
Video one, two and three: The improvisation of release, focusing on dynamics and space.
Video three and four: Improvisation based on jazz, focusing on dynamics and space
Video five: Fusing elements of both jazz and release whilst aiming to express the use of dynamics and space
- Exploration of dynamics
The five videos are short sections from my improvisations that I saved as I could clearly see a strong intention of dynamics throughout which is relevant for my choreography. Furthermore the movement I created was comfortable for my body and made me move with purpose therefore snippets of this improvisation could be possibly seen in my solo.
- Exploration of the space
Workshop eight is my first opportunity to explore the use of the space and make decisions on how I want to set my solo onstage. My third sub-question, 'How can the body explore the use of space within two different styles?', challenged me the most due to a lack of research on the differences in space within jazz and release. As I have previously stated before, I was planning to use floor work numerously throughout my choreography which links to release technique. Many teachers and choreographers use floor work based release technique due to the gravitational challenge therefore it made sense for me to use it as my leading idea for this sub-question. Although jazz can demonstrate uses of the floor, it is more recognised to involve examples such as jumps, travelling phtases from a corner and usually a standing, upright posture. Therefore I was interested to also involve these which lead to make the decision to use the full space given. I want my movement to travel from all corners and to create multiple pathways through the space which I think would be intriguing for the audience.
