Workshop 8

How can the dynamics of jazz combine with the dynamics of release?

Date of workshop: 12/12/19

Aims

  • To watch all of my improvisation videos, making notes and remembering/ rehearsing the movement I am keeping from these videos.
  • Recap and clean set phrases

  • Create movement showing elements of fusion, clear phrases involving the movement and dynamics of both jazz and release.

Planning and Research

12:00pm - 12:30pm(30 minutes):  Focus on rehearsing movement from improvisation videos and cleaning set phrases.

12:30 pm- 13:45pm  (1 hour, 15 minutes): Create at least one phrase demonstrating fusion. Mainly think about the jazz style e.g. spawn fingers, whilst in cooperating the accentuation of breath and moments of releasing energy.

During the choreography process,
it became difficult to create fresh ideas Therefore to encourage my productivity, I began looking at fosse style images and came across these two images that display the use of spawn fingers. This inspired me to create phrases based on both jazz and release whilst in cooperating the use of spawn fingers throughout as I figured this could result in a sense of style.

Reflection

The first thirty minutes of my workshop followed smoothly with the first plan of my lesson because I was very organised and listed all of my phrases in a notebook. This meant that I was able to recap my movement  quickly and effectively which allowed me to move onto my next aim of the workshop, to create movement showing elements of fusion, clear phrases involving the dynamics of both jazz and release. This aim was initiated by the use of images portraying spawn fingers which what I want to introduce within the phrase I create.

In conclusion, the workshop exceeded my planning because by the end of this session I had four different phrases created by the focus on spawn fingers and the dynamics of jazz and release.
Below each video  I have discussed and analysed the phrases in more detail. Overall it was a successful workshop therefore  I can now start to focus my last workshops on structuring my solo.

Video One

This phase originally began with a simple battement in which I began to spend time developing it so that it was the floor and it travelled with a shift across the space. This helped me to accentuate release movement as well as jazz  because the combination of the battement and shift created in an inward breath. During the process of this phrase, I decided  to repeat the travelling battement as I think it is an effective choreographic device and every time I repeat I demonstrate small changes such as changing the levels of my arm reaches.

Video Two

So far, this has been my favourite phrase to create.  During my analysis of this video, I could clearly see the use of spawn fingers throughout. I think I explored this in an interesting way, e.g. by brushing my arm across the back of my leg. Furthermore I could see a strong dynamic specifically when I release into an arch then suddenly drop onto my back on the floor.

Video Three

This video demonstrates a clear use of jazz hands and I am interested in the way I co- ordinated the bend of my elbow with the bend of my leg. There is a sharp dynamic seen throughout this and it then it releases into a strong backward pull cause a huge arch in the spine.

Video Four

This phrase was created from focusing my intention on release. I  am intrigued by my thought process within this as it orignally began with a simple release of the arm in which I began to develop into repetition which I think creates suspension. My last arm releases into a long extension leading me to travel to the corner.
Furthermore, I continue to travel diagonally from the top right left corner into the centre of the studio. This then continues into a short phrase that is a development from the movement in workshop three. I consider this movement to be quite quirky as it has a quick dynamic involving both spawn fingers, contractions and a realease into a back arch.
